Music fans were treated to a surprise last night (February 27) when rock icon Courtney Love joined Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong onstage during his intimate show in London with his covers band, The Coverups.
The impromptu appearance, one of two surprise gigs Armstrong announced last week, saw The Coverups perform classic rock and punk anthems at The Garage in Islington.
Halfway through the set, Armstrong introduced Love for a special guest appearance. Together, they belted out covers of "He's A Whore" and "Surrender" by Cheap Trick, and "Even The Losers" by Tom Petty.
Taking the stage, Love jokingly addressed the audience: "My name is Courtney Love – you may not remember me. I've been living in a cave in Birmingham for about nine years. We'll give this a f*cking try, right?"
It was towards the end of her performance, however, that Love truly surprised the crowd. She announced her return to the stage, not just with The Coverups, but with her former band, Hole.
"Later… I'll be back in Hole," she declared before leaving the stage.
This has sent fans into a frenzy, speculating on a potential full Hole reunion. While details remain unclear, Billie Joe Armstrong capped off the evening by reiterating the special nature of the night, stating: "I told you it was going to be a special night!"
Editor’s Thoughts: On our podcast, Unplugged with Tyler Winters and John Pearman, I’ve mentioned a few times that it sounds like grunge is making its way back — and that it’s being led by females. So this only seems fitting.
