happydaze talks Cool Blue, band memories and much more -exclusive interview
We recently had the opportunity to meet up with a Pop-punk band from Edinburgh, Scotland, happydaze, in an exclusive All Punked Up Interview. We talked about their new single "Cool Blue," band memories, and much more. Keep up with happydaze: Spotify, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.
First, I wanted to congratulate you on the most recent release of your single "Cool Blue"! How are you feeling post-release?
Thank you! It's so sick to be back releasing music after our first year of touring. Seeing the response from the track resonating with so many people is incredible. We just want to put out more songs!! The support has been unreal; if you enjoyed CB, wait til you hear the rest! [embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TlF15u0sef4[/embed]
What would you say was your biggest inspiration for writing "Cool Blue"?
In terms of production, I really like the cut-up sample sound - I usually play a few chords on a few different instruments, then build little call-response riffs out of them, add the beat underneath, and the vibes start from there. I wrote the song right after coming back from our first tour. The events going on in my life at the time were what inspired it. We all have people who are a massive part of our lives who aren't there anymore, whether you grow apart or choose to not see them, or life just gets in the way of the relationship - this song is about me going through that. My goal was to write the most happydaze song possible, and I think this is it.
What is your favorite lyric that you have written and why?
I have so many favourites for different reasons, but I think the chorus of Missing Out stands out the most to me.
"Take some time, what you gonna do? Save some life; this is all for you"
It's a reminder that life is for living, not sitting inside every day waiting for it to come to you; you've got to go and get it. I did write it in the middle of lockdown. So it's been so cathartic to get to sing that lyric in so many places this past year.
What are some of your favorite memories as a band?
Our first tour was a surreal experience - walking out to 5000 people at our 7th-ever show at Brixton academy is definitely up there. However, all 4 of us being stopped by the police in Prague for riding scooters on the pavement and getting a £3 fine each is a great story to tell. A year of touring gives you a lifetime of stories to tell; there's too many favourites, haha.
What is something that you have accomplished so far in your career that you are most proud of?
We've managed to experience so many things so early in our career that so many others don't get the chance to. Playing the barrowlands in Glasgow, where we got to see so many bands growing up, was unreal. The thing I am most proud of is the songs we are releasing now and what we have to come. It was a year of blood, sweat, and lots of tears to get it where it is, and I am immensely proud of what we've put together. "Cool Blue" is just the start!
If you could write a song with any band or singer, who would it be?
So many. Too many songwriters to name. For me, the band would be Metallica cause I could brag about that for the rest of my life, haha. I'd love to write with Justin Vernon from Bon Iver; man is a genius. In terms of producers - I would love to sit in the studio with Kenny Beats for a day/week/month/year. I bet we would create something ridiculous together.
How about your ideal tour: if you could set it up with any band or singer, who would it be?
The ideal tour for us was with Neck Deep and Boston Manor. We wouldn't have gotten through our first Euro tour without them and their crew. Being out for a month in a very shit van takes it out of you, especially when it's for the first time. Those guys looked after us and got us through the stresses, reminding us that everyone in a band deals with those stresses, and you just need to pull together. So yeah, let's just redo that this year so we can make it up to them, haha. Failing that, we'll tour with anyone if the vibe is right!
If we were to get in the car with you right now, what song would we be listening to?
I just discovered Benny Sings, his new track Young Hearts, is very groovy; I've been listening to a bunch of his stuff. Also very into a new band called headcave - ridiculous riffs.
Just for kicks and giggles: if you could be any kitchen utensil, what would you be?
Plastic spatula - can't cook without it, haha.
Is there anything else you would like your fans to know?
Music, music, music. We spent 2022 writing a record we are super proud of - we're giving most of the songs their light of day as singles, and I'm super excited to see how people react to them as they're released. We really believe in what we're putting into the world. If it resonates with people, that's the greatest feeling, and we really hope you enjoy You May Also Like: happydaze share new song “Cool Blue”, prove they should be on everyone’s radar
