Lizzy Farrall talks new album "Bruise"-exclusive interview
With Lizzy Farrall's new album, Bruise just around the corner, we caught up with the alt-pop princess to find out more about the upcoming release and how she's feeling.
You're just a week away from the release of your debut album, Bruise on 27th March - how are you feeling?
It’s a cocktail of emotions at the moment, I’m scared but then excited for the next chapter. My physicals arrived last week and seeing them for the first time got me pretty choked up.
Would you say the same themes from your EP, Barbados follow through into Bruise?
Yeah, the Barbados EP was my stepping stone for Bruise, I didn’t want give away too much of the concept of the album too early but needed to put something out to hint things were growing & changing.
How does your sound in Bruise compare to your previous music?
Very different, there are still elements in there, but I’ve grown as a person since writing my previous music & that has a huge effect on my art.
Did you work with any other artists to create this album?
Yeah, I did a few writing sessions before heading into the studio. I’m very much about pushing myself out of my comfort zone when writing and I always feel getting an outside perspective on my songs helps to make them better. You can get so stuck in your own head when writing by yourself. I did some writing sessions with Miles Kent, Chris Curren, Anton Delost, Kyle Blamey and the album was produced and engineered by Brett Romnes.
Do you have a go-to ritual when you're writing music?
Honestly no. I tend to feel most creative when I’m going through emotions, music has been massively therapeutic within my mental health, it’s always been my outlet & a coping mechanism.
What's the story behind the white rabbit imagery on your album artwork?
The white rabbit mask is an ambiguous symbol, evoking the idea of an other-worldly guiding figure - like the white rabbit from Alice in Wonderland or Frank from Donnie Darko - whilst also being a more personal metaphor for a journey of rebirth.
Any stand-out lyrics on Bruise?
One that really hits home for me is off “okay”, it’s the second to last song on the album but I guess you could almost call it an interlude rather than a song. The very last lyrics are “I’ll bang my head against the wall till I know for sure I don’t need anyone anymore”, and like I said, they’re very personal to me.
You've announced a 'Purple Movement' on social media, can you tell us more about that?
So the purple movement happened as sadly my tour which was meant to push the album got postponed, due to the Coronavirus, which has left me to release an album without a tour to promote it. This can really affect the release of an album, especially if you’re an upcoming artist like myself. After it was announced that the tour was to be postponed, my inboxes were full of messages from people who follow my music asking how they could help my album reach a bigger audience, so I came up with the idea of making a purple movement for a way for my followers to help and also feel like we are a little unit.
We're so excited to hear Bruise in full, where can we listen/preorder?
You can listen on all musical platforms and preorder physicals via The Pure Noise records website.
