MNYS releases new alternative pop single "Backwards" capturing our full attention
MNYS is back with a new single called "Backwards"!
In case you're unfamiliar, MNYS is an artist-on-the-rise that we here are APU are keeping a close eye on. His latest releases have been full of promise and radiating candor. It seems, though, that we aren't quite the only ones who have caught on, either. "Backwards" is MNYS's second release with Pure Noise Records; the first being "Night Terrors".
With the same nihilistic attitude of everyone's favorite pop-punk songs, but with the musical progression of a song suited for radio play, "Backwards" has something for everyone. The song explores the concept of "bending over backward" for others and wearing yourself down in the process. MNYS's diction and tone invites fans into his mind that is clearly full of dread and ultimately just a crushing sense of pseudo-loneliness.
Feeling love (romantic or otherwise) unreciprocated is the sort of thing we all go through and sometimes the worst part is not being able to comprehend why. MNYS explores the frustration of just wanting the devotion he sees projected in the media and contemplates why he can't experience the same. It's a track full of that relatable quality but made just that much more honest by MNYS's voice and presence.
Moreover, there's an element of escapism as running and moving on from relationships of ill-intent is heavily themed throughout the lyrics. Reconciling with these heavy concepts he sings: "I’m bending over backwards, would it kill you to say that I’m sorry".
"Backwards" is reminiscent of the early 2000's soft rock songs like "1979" by The Smashing Pumpkins and yet remade and infused with the modern 2021 production style that's being popularized by new artists like Lil Huddy and even Chase Atlantic. This fusion is key (and honestly genius) as it provides fans with that nostalgic sense as if this is a song they knew at one point, but doesn't feel out of place in the modern music scene. In fact, it feels like exactly what we need right now.
It seems MNYS is hitting all the right notes, so this release only leaves us excited to see what's next for this alt-pop star-in-the-making.
