New releases worth checking out this week (3/8/24)
Here are some of this week's new music and video releases worthy of your attention.
Fun fact: Ever wondered what the most collected vinyl of all time is? You may immediately think of music juggernauts like The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Prince, or maybe even some Adele or Taylor Swift. These titans of music are no doubt endlessly popular, but according to Discogs, a massive online record collection database, the vinyl most likely to be chilling in your neighbor's crate might surprise you. It's not a greatest hits or a decades-old classic, but it’s the original 2013 2xLP vinyl pressing of Daft Punk's 2013 electronic masterpiece, Random Access Memories. I bet you never guessed that.
Now for the new releases.
This week, the music scene sees some fresh releases that are worthy of a listen. From emerging artists to mainstay icons, let’s dive into the latest tracks making waves in the world of alternative music, and maybe you’ll end up finding your next favorite tune. Let's get right into it.
Northlane - “Afterimage”
Northlane's latest single serves as the last teaser for their upcoming EP Mirror's Edge, dropping April 12th.
Scene Queen - “Finger”
FYI - This is NSFW. Scene Queen is known for, let’s call it hyper-sexual-focused lyrics. And this song is no different. She calls her style (or genre) of music bimbocore. I’m going to be honest here. I do not care for this style of music whatsoever. It’s just not for me. However, there is clearly a niche for what she is doing as she has over 750,000 monthly listeners on Spotify. That’s nothing to scoff at. I will say though, she can definitely sing and she showcases that talent in this song. I’d personally like to see her lean more into that, but, hey, maybe I’m not her target audience. So what do I know?
Too Close To Touch - “Novocaine” ft. Bad Omens
In a poignant tribute to their late frontman, Keaton Pierce, Too Close To Touch releases their final album, For Keeps, this Friday, March 8th via Epitaph. The album features the powerful and emotional single, "Novocaine," co-written and performed by Pierce, serving as a "last gift" to the band's dedicated fans. Pierce tragically passed away in March 2022, leaving a lasting impact on the music scene and his devoted bandmates.
Cold Years - “Choke”
The track appears on the band's forthcoming album, A Different Life, set for release on April 26th via MNRK.
Dayseeker - “My Immortal” (Evanescence cover)
This stunning rendition features on the band's upcoming acoustic album, Replica, available digitally on April 19th and physically on June 14th via Spinefarm Records.
NOFX - “I’m a Rat”
Punk legends NOFX might be gearing up for their final farewell tour later this year, but they're not leaving without one last musical hurrah. Fat Mike and the band have announced a five-track collection titled "Half Album," dropping April 19th via Fat Wreck Chords. To whet fans' appetites, they've unveiled the lead single, "I'm a Rat." Want to see them live? Here’s how to get NOFX tickets.
Twin Atlantic - “World Class Entertainment“
Twin Atlantic has already announced their new album Meltdown which will be released on August 9th. "World Class Entertainment" is the latest release from the forthcoming album.
The Warning - "Hell You Call A Dream" and "Qué Más Quieres"
The Warning has announced their new album Keep Me Fed out June 28th. To go along with the announcement, the trio has released two new singles "Hell You Call A Dream" and "Qué Más Quieres".
Lauren Mayberry - “Change Shapes“
Chvrches vocalist Lauren Mayberry continues her solo journey with a brand new song, "Change Shapes." This marks her third solo release following 2023's "Are You Awake?" and "Shame."
Tenacious D - “…Baby One More Time” (Britney Spears cover)
It’s a cover you didn’t know you needed. After a snippet of the track went viral on TikTok, Tenacious D has shared the full version of their cover of Britney Spears’ “…Baby One More Time”. Apparently, the new track will appear in the closing credits of the upcoming film Kung Fu Panda 4.
Bearings - “Scenery” (re-imagined)
Your Broken Hero - “Don't Listen To My Voicemail” (feat. Pierre Bouvier of Simple Plan)
Magnolia Park - "Hellstar"
This is definitely a new direction for the band.
Well, there you have it. That’ll do it for this week’s new music releases worth checking out. See you next week!
