Live Nation’s praised merch cut elimination could harm independent venues?Live Nation has announced a new initiative called “On the Road Again” that will provide financial support to touring artists. This includes no longer taking cuts of artist merchandise sold at any of the club-sized venues it operates and offering $1,500 stipends per show to all headlining and support acts at their venues for the purpose of covering tour expenses like gas and lodging. However, the National Independent Venue Association (NIVA) argues that these short-term benefits will harm independent venues in the long run. NIVA believes that this initiative is a calculated attempt by Live Nation to steer artists away from smaller independent venues in favor of the venues Live Nation operates.

Spotify launches Jam, a real-time collaborative playlist controlled by up to 32 people. Spotify is launching a new social feature called Jam, allowing multiple users (up to 32) to collaboratively create a playlist in real time. This feature is designed for group settings like parties, where attendees can contribute songs to a shared queue. While only Spotify Premium subscribers can initiate a Jam, anyone, including free users, can add songs to it. Jams can be initiated by tapping the speaker icon and selecting "Start a Jam." Participants on the same Wi-Fi network are prompted to join, and there are various methods to invite others, including Bluetooth, QR codes, and social media links. Spotify's personalization technology is integrated into Jam, generating song suggestions based on the group's collective preferences. You can see how it works here.
Spotify will not ban music made by AI, says boss Daniel Ek. Spotify's CEO, Daniel Ek, stated that the platform does not plan to completely ban AI-generated content, but it will not allow AI to impersonate real artists without their consent. Earlier this year, a fake Drake and The Weeknd collaboration was removed from Spotify and other streaming services. Ek categorized AI use in music into three "buckets": tools like auto-tune to improve music (acceptable), tools that mimic human artists (unacceptable), and a middle ground where AI-created music is influenced by existing acts but doesn't directly impersonate them. Regulating AI use in the industry is expected to be challenging, and Spotify is working to address such issues. While AI is not banned in all forms on Spotify, the platform currently doesn't permit its content to train AI models that produce music.
Dillinger Escape Plan turning down 'astronomical' reunion money. The Dillinger Escape Plan, despite being offered substantial sums of money, has no plans to reunite, according to frontman Greg Puciato. The band members have been active in various projects, with Puciato notably involved in multiple endeavors. In a recent interview, Puciato expressed that there is no desire to reunite the band, even though some see musical similarities between his recent work and The Dillinger Escape Plan. He stated that he doesn't miss the band and that the only incentive for a reunion would be for financial reasons, which he's not interested in. While fans occasionally speculate about a reunion, the band has shown no signs of getting back together.
Live Nation eliminating artist merch cuts at clubs nationwide. This is BIG. Major concert promotion company, Live Nation, has announced the end of merchandise fees for artists at its club-sized venues across the United States. This change is part of the “On the Road Again” program, created in partnership with Willie Nelson, which also provides artists with an additional $1,500 per show to help cover tour expenses. The program covers 77 Live Nation venues, including all House of Blues and Fillmore locations, and will be gradually implemented over several months. Merchandise fees, which typically amount to 15-30% of merch sales, have been criticized by artists such as Jack Antonoff and Jeff Rosenstock as unfair and detrimental to working artists.
