News you may have missed! (10/3/20)
Why does the scene hate it when bands make money? Vans launch contest for undiscovered musicians. All Time Low and others announce livestream concerts.
How is it already October?! I can’t believe how fast things seem to be going, but weirdly so slow all at the same time. Is anyone else feeling this way?
Random Thoughts…
I have to say that I was digging the new Machine Gun Kelly album over the last couple of weeks. For those of you who don’t know, MGK released a pop punk album called ‘Tickets to My Downfall’. I will say that it’s not an album that I would compare to one of the great pop punk albums out there, but it definitely holds its own for sure. I think he set out to make a pop punk album and he absolutely nailed it.
And for those of you who have been listening to me over the last few months, I don’t mean to toot my own horn, but I’ve been saying for awhile now that in order for pop punk to get back into the mainstream, it could use help from some people who already have a hold on mainstream radio. One of the artists I’ve been recommending to help pop punk make its comeback was Halsey. Why Halsey? Because Halsey has already released a few rock-esque tracks and actually loves and has a personal relationship with the scene we all know and love. Well guess what? Halsey is featured on one of MGK’s new pop punk tracks and it’s actually pretty good. So again, not to toot my own horn, but I’ve been saying lately that pop punk’s comeback is inevitable. With Halsey and MGK having their ties to mainstream music right now, they are now opening the door for pop punk to walk through again.
Oh, and I hear that the MGK song that features Halsey is being made into a music video which means it’s being released as a single, which also means it could very well hit the Top 40 radio stations. It’s happening, guys. Pop punk is coming back.
The All Punked Up Podcast
We released podcast episode #010 this week. I can’t believe that we’ve already released our tenth (say it with me: 10th!) episode.
This week, Tyler, Ally and Bailey talk about the "sell out" mentality and how it can lead to a toxic environment amongst bands and fans in the scene. The team also gives their takes on how livestream concerts are starting to become a big deal and what that means for the future of how we get our entertainment. Also, after the crew talks about the interesting Tom DeLonge cake one contestant on Great British Bake Off made, they play 'Two Truths and a Lie'. So come play along with your favorite hosts and see if you can figure out what lie they are telling!
