News you may have missed! (11/12/23)
What’s wrong with the new blink-182 album? + Spotify's new royalty payment may not be as bad as it sounds.
Welcome back to another newsletter. As the year winds down, we always see the amount of relevant news in the music industry start to dwindle. That seems to be the case this week, but there was still some interesting stuff out there. Let’s get to it.
Some of the links below may be to publications other than All Punked Up.
ICYMI: What’s wrong with the new blink-182 album? In this episode, John and Tyler get very critical as they review blink-182’s latest no. 1 album, “One More Time…”. There are a lot of thoughts out there on this record, especially when it comes to the drums. But after speculating that blink-182 released two different versions of the record which sounded noticeably different, they graded the vocals, the music, the production, and the overall album. They also discuss where the album ranks in blink-182’s catalog. And at the end, they pick their Top 3 tracks.
ICYMI: happydaze teaches Scottish slang and how they were able attract American label Thriller Records. This week, John and Tyler interview the Scotland-based rock band happydaze. This band has been on Tyler’s radar since 2021. He’s reviewed a few of their songs with praise over the last couple of years and was finally able to get them on the podcast. Listen in to find out how a band from Scotland was able to get the attention of the American-based record label Thriller Records, whether or not UK bands purposely try to hide their accents while singing, and then the band teaches John and Tyler some Scotland slang.
Nearly half of all albums sold in the U.S. last week were Taylor Swift’s ‘1989 (Taylor’s Version)’… Whoa. In its first week, the re-released 1989 album, made a monumental impact on the music market, representing a staggering 43.8% of all albums sold in the U.S. during that tracking week, with 1.359 million out of a total 3.102 million albums. Impressively, physical copies of 1989 (Taylor’s Version) alone accounted for 46.9% of all physical album sales, selling 1.261 million out of the 2.689 million physical albums sold in the country. The album's success was fueled by its availability in 15 collectible physical formats, including various vinyl variants, CD editions, and cassette editions, with specific retailers like Target offering exclusive bonus tracks. Taylor Swift's albums, collectively in 2023, have sold 4.531 million copies, marking her as the top-selling artist of the year, accounting for 5.4% of total album sales, which stood at 83.758 million sold across all artists.
Spotify WILL NOT pay an artist for a streamed track unless that track accumulates 1,000 streams in a 12-month period. This may sound like a big blow to the smaller artists, but after reading the linked article, I think this only helps everyone in the long run. This new policy seems to be a way to curb payouts away from fraudulent streams and from non-music “artists”. Keep in mind, 1,000 streams on Spotify is equivalent to less than $4.00, so the smaller artists aren’t really being hurt anymore than they already were with the current small payouts they are currently receiving. We’ll see if more information comes to light in the coming weeks that could change my mind, but the article is worth a read if you feel that the initial news left a bad taste in your mouth. I will say this, I think we can all agree there’s still no better time to support your favorite small artists than right now. Make sure you buy their merch, attend their shows, and buy physical copies of their albums.
