On this week’s episode of The All Punked Up Podcast, John and Tyler interview GRAMMY-nominated and Platinum-certified artist Cassadee Pope. In an interview you definitely don’t want to miss, Cassadee talks about everything from forming Hey Monday to winning Season 3 of The Voice and transitioning back into pop-punk. Pope discussed the importance of mental health while on tour and her hope to start an initiative to get therapists and counselors on the road with bands to help members cope with the struggles of life on tour. She also talked about her decision to go on The Voice out of desperation and why she chose Blake Shelton as her coach. Pope shared her fondest memories of her country music career but also discussed her decision to go independent and break away from the big label she was on due to some toxicity and creative differences. Finally, Pope answered some fan-submitted questions, including her favorite lyric from the upcoming album and her ideal tourmates.

ICYMI: blink-182 is BACK!… and so is Fyre Festival…
Pop Songs Really Are Shorter Than Ever Now. Songs are getting shorter and shorter, with streaming and TikTok having a dramatic impact on how hits are made, how music is promoted, and how the world discovers new music. TikTok has had a substantial impact on the way musicians write songs, with the platform being one of the most significant forces for discovering and amplifying music both new and old. Streaming services incentivize listening to an entire song, because that's how they determine who gets paid, and they pay artists per play, irrespective of how long a song lasts. By making a song short, acts expect people will play it more than once. For songwriting teams, whose job is to maximize their playlisting and streaming, this means erasing the “boring” bits from their songs with “topliners” being drafted in to write killer hooks. I’ve been harping on this for the last couple of years. It’s just a different game being played nowadays, and in my opinion, it’s a good idea for artists to hop in and start playing now or get left behind. This was a good read.
Members of Dillinger Escape Plan and Every Time I Die launch new band Better Lovers, going on tour with Underoath. Greg Puciato from The Dillinger Escape Plan and Jordan Buckley, Clayton Holyoak, and Stephen Micciche from Every Time I Die, along with Will Putney, have formed a new band called Better Lovers. The band's first single, "30 Under 13," was released on Sharptone Records and accompanied by a music video directed by Eric Richter. Buckley says that the pandemic and the last few years have made him hungrier and more grateful, and this new project is the next evolution for each of them. Puciato says that Buckley sent him some already finished instrumental tracks that woke up a side of him that he thought was extinct. The band is also going on tour with Underoath. You can find tour dates and tickets here.
Bring Me The Horizon announce new single and video “LosT”. The single will come out on May 4th. The band had previously teased the track during their European tour. The song includes the lyrics, "Stupid medicine / Not doing anything," which were shown in a YouTube series documenting the tour. The release of “LosT” follows the band's recent EP, Post Human: Survival Horror, which came out in October 2020. You can pre-save the single here.
With Frank Ocean out, blink-182 steps up to close out Coachella Weekend 2 finale. Frank Ocean has had to pull out of Coachella Weekend 2, where he was due to perform as the Sunday night (4/22) headliner. blink-182 has been announced as his replacement. A statement released by Ocean’s representative revealed that the singer had sustained an injury to his leg on the festival grounds in the lead-up to weekend one, which had led to changes to his planned performance. You can stream the performance live here at 11:20PM CT. I guess we blink-182 fans will just have to sit through another live performance. Fine. Also, apparently, since Frank Ocean dropped out, it will reportedly cost the festival $8 million ($4 million for each performance). Wow.
Speaking of Coachella, ever wondered how much headliners get paid? Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival is known for its eclectic lineup of big-name performers, but with such star-studded talent comes a substantial amount of cash. While the festival has never officially released its payment figures, online rumors suggest that headlining acts receive millions for their performances. According to Trapital Podcast, Bad Bunny will earn $5 million for his headlining show at Coachella 2023, which is not surprising given his success with over 18.5 billion streams in 2022, making him Spotify's top artist for the third year in a row. The Weeknd replaced Kanye West in 2022 and earned $8.5 million, while Ariana Grande made $8 million for her two-weekend headlining gig in 2019. Beyoncé was paid between $8 and $12 million for her 2018 performances, and Lady Gaga, Kendrick Lamar, and Radiohead were reportedly paid between $3 million and $4 million in 2017. However, Cardi B revealed that she only earned $70,000 per weekend for her Coachella performances in 2018 and even lost money after paying for her stage set, which cost her $300,000. Up-and-coming artists on lower lines of the lineup typically earn around $10,000. As the festival continues to grow in popularity, it's likely that the amounts paid to headlining acts will increase in the future.
Cassette tape sales at a 20-year high. Sales of cassette tapes have hit their highest point in 20 years, with a total of over 195,000 cassettes sold in 2022, up from 3,823 in 2012. The British Phonographic Industry (BPI) reports that cassette sales have risen for 10 consecutive years, thanks in part to releases from Arctic Monkeys, Harry Styles and Florence + the Machine. BPI spokesperson Paul Williams cites a similar resurgence in the cassette market as the vinyl market, which saw vinyl outsell CDs in 2022 for the first time in 35 years. Younger fans in particular are attracted to the collectibility and unique album sequencing of cassette tapes, according to Mark Burgess, founder of Flashback Records.
Spotify being accused of adding AI-generated music into its playlists? Questions have arisen about Spotify’s possible inclusion of AI-generated music in its artist radio playlists. This comes after Adam Faze, studio chief of FazeWorld, on Twitter shared a playlist of 49 songs that appeared to be the same track, but with different artist names, song titles, and album artwork. Sidenote: I wouldn’t be surprised to hear one day that some music streaming services wind up under fire for giving preferential treatment to AI-generated songs. And then we find out later that those said streaming services are the ones actually creating those AI songs as a way to rake in the profits from royalties that in turn take away from real artist streams.
Now there’s a “lost” Oasis album made by AI, Liam Gallagher has his thoughts. Breezer, a UK band, created an album called AISIS that features their original tracks with an AI-generated version of Liam Gallagher's vocals. Despite not being made by the original members of Oasis, the album has gained a positive response from many Oasis fans, including Liam Gallagher himself who praised the project. Breezer created the album due to frustration with waiting for an Oasis reunion. AISIS is an alternate reality concept album where the band's 95-97 lineup continued to write music. This album could be the best "new" Oasis music for now. Listen here.

On her fifth attempt, she drove her car through the security gate. The woman believed she had been communicating with Barker on social media, but it turned out to be an imposter.
