Metallica end a 32-year-long No. 1 streak on Billboard 200 thanks to a country music artist. Billboard reports that Metallica's latest album, 72 Seasons, failed to debut at number one on the Billboard 200 chart, marking the first time in 32 years that a Metallica album has not debuted at number one since their 1991 self-titled album. The album debuted at number two behind Morgan Wallen's "One Thing at a Time," which has remained in the top spot for seven weeks with 166,000 equivalent units. However, "72 Seasons" did achieve the largest week for any rock or hard rock album in nearly four years, with 146,000 equivalent album units.
Crazy Town’s Shifty Shellshock Arrested for DUI Days After Violent Fight with Bandmate. And what a violent fight it was… Seth Binzer, also known as Shifty Shellshock, Crazy Town's vocalist, was arrested for driving under the influence (DUI) on April 25th, just a few days after a bloody brawl with his bandmate Bobby Reeves. The fight broke out after a poor show in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, where Binzer accused Reeves of stealing his money. The band was kicked off the "Nu Metal Madness Tour 2" after the incident. The 48-year-old singer was detained in Myrtle Beach after the police were alerted about a potential drunk driver in a black SUV who appeared to be falling asleep at the wheel. When the police arrived, they found Binzer behind the wheel with visible signs of intoxication. He was subjected to a field sobriety test, which indicated that he was unfit to drive. Binzer has previously struggled with drug addiction and was arrested in 2012 for battery and cocaine possession. You can read the police report here.
Study finds 50% of vinyl buyers in the US don’t have a record player. I admit, I’m one of the 50% who does not own a record player… According to Luminate's Top Entertainment Trends for 2023 report, only 50% of vinyl buyers in the US own a record player, compared to 15% of music listeners overall. This suggests that many vinyl buyers might be purchasing vinyl as part of merch but not necessarily listening to it. The report credits these statistics largely to "superfans," defined as music listeners who spend above-average time and money on music, actively discover new music, participate in music-related activities on social media, and plan on attending a live music event in the next 12 months. The majority of music revenue still comes from streaming services, with vinyl sales being a small but growing part of the market. In the UK, vinyl sales surpassed CD sales for the first time in 35 years, while overall music sales increased by 3% in 2022 to nearly £2 billion, the highest figure since 2003.
Bamboozle 2023 canceled week before festival was due to take place. The Bamboozle festival, which was due to take place from May 5-7 at Bader Field, Atlantic City, US, has been canceled a week before the event was set to open. The event was to be the first Bamboozle since 2012 and was set to feature acts such as Limp Bizkit, Mayday Parade, and Papa Roach. The cancellation was due to a failure to submit the necessary paperwork needed for final permits according to Anthony Swan, city business administrator, who added that the issue was still unresolved with the event fast approaching. Organizers confirmed the cancellation in a statement that thanked fans and requested refunds be requested at the point of purchase.
New Senate Bill Would Require Ticket Fee Transparency Upfront. Finally. The US Senate has introduced a bill that will require ticket vendors to provide a breakdown of ticket costs, including hidden fees that are usually added on during checkout for concerts, sports, and other live events. The TICKET Act aims to introduce transparency and competition within the ticketing industry. If passed, Live Nation and other ticketing vendors will have to reveal the entire cost of the ticket upfront, including all of the fees. Ticket fees can account for anywhere from 21 percent to 57 percent of the total cost of the ticket, according to CNBC. The Transparency in Charges for Key Events Ticketing Act is co-sponsored by US Commerce Committee Chair Maria Cantwell and ranking committee member Ted Cruz. You can read more about it here.

Spotify passes 500 million monthly active users for the first time. Spotify has surpassed 515 million monthly active users as of March 31, a YoY growth of 22%, while paid subscribers now sit at 210 million, an increase of 15% YoY, according to its Q1 2023 earnings release. Spotify CEO Daniel Ek said the results represented the company's second-largest quarter of user growth in its history, exceeding its guidance by 15 million. Despite the streamlining and cost-cutting efforts that led to the layoffs of 600 staff, the company reported a net loss of $248 million for Q1, which covers the period from January to March. The average revenue per user fell by 1% to $4.77. The earnings release did not provide any update on the launch of the higher-quality HiFi tier, which has been in development for more than two years.
