Foo Fighters Reveal Josh Freese As New Live Drummer. Foo Fighters have announced Josh Freese as their new live drummer, unveiling their new touring lineup during a streaming event called "Foo Fighters: Preparing Music For Concerts." The band playfully teased other potential replacements before revealing Freese, including Chad Smith of Red Hot Chili Peppers, Danny Carey of Tool, and Tommy Lee of Mötley Crüe. Freese is taking over from longtime drummer Taylor Hawkins, who sadly passed away in March 2022 at the age of 50. The Foo Fighters' upcoming album, "But Here We Are," is dedicated to Hawkins. Freese, known for his versatile drumming skills and impressive resume working with bands like Nine Inch Nails and Sting, has previously performed with the Foo Fighters during tribute shows for Hawkins.
Courtney Love accused of “grabbing journalist’s crotch” without consent. During a conversation on his podcast, journalist Frank Elaridi claimed that Courtney Love once grabbed his crotch without his consent. The incident allegedly occurred six years ago when Elaridi interviewed Love at Coachella and was invited to hang out with her at an afterparty. According to Elaridi, Love unexpectedly touched him inappropriately after a photo was taken of them together. Elaridi expressed his surprise and mentioned that someone across the room captured the moment in the photo, which he displayed during the podcast episode. Elaridi clarified that he had no intention of "canceling" Love or seeking retribution for the incident, as he still considered her a rock star in his mind. He shared the story in response to a discussion about Nahko Bear, who faced an allegation of sexual misconduct in the past.

Billy McFarland has secured funding for Fyre Fest 2.0 and a Broadway musical. Billy McFarland, the founder of the ill-fated Fyre Festival in 2017, has announced that he has secured sufficient funds to repay his debts, relaunch the festival with a new version, and develop a Broadway musical based on the original event. McFarland made the announcement through TikTok and in an interview with journalist Adam Glyn. He revealed plans for the musical, which he named Fyre Fest 1.5, stating that it would feature current music artists and a Broadway format that both satirizes and highlights the positive aspects of the original festival. McFarland assured that those owed money in the Bahamas would be promptly reimbursed. Although he did not provide specific details about the second edition of the festival, he mentioned that it would be held on an island other than the Bahamas. According to McFarland, many artists have expressed interest in being part of the upcoming lineup, while others have rejected the idea outright.
3 major record labels are now bringing in $2.9M per hour, streaming a big reason for that. The major music companies, Universal Music Group, Sony Music Group, and Warner Music Group, collectively generated an impressive $6.21 billion in revenue during the first quarter of 2023. This amounts to an average of approximately $69 million per day or nearly $2.9 million every hour. In terms of recorded music revenue, including merchandise and ancillary streams, the three companies earned $5.00 billion during this period, averaging around $56 million per day or over $2.3 million per hour. Notably, recorded music streaming revenues accounted for $3.32 billion, translating to approximately $37 million per day or $1.5 million per hour. While the revenue growth for these major companies remains strong, it is not as substantial as the double-digit year-on-year increases seen in the past. Universal Music Group experienced a 9.6% YoY revenue growth in recorded music, Sony Music Group recorded a 10.5% YoY growth, and Warner Music Group had a more modest increase of 2.5% in recorded music revenues.
Major Labels to Send ‘Takedown Notices’ to Streaming Services for AI Soundalikes. The three major label groups, Universal, Sony, and Warner, have been engaged in discussions with music streaming services, including Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon Music, to address the issue of AI-generated vocal recordings imitating popular artists. The proposed solution would involve citing violations of rights of publicity rather than copyright, akin to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) but on a voluntary basis. Unlike copyright infringement, AI-generated soundalikes typically infringe on trademark or rights of publicity, which protect celebrities from unauthorized commercial exploitation of their names and likenesses. Recent attention was drawn to this issue when an AI-generated track imitating Drake and The Weeknd's vocals was uploaded to streaming services and subsequently removed. Citing rights of publicity presents legal complexities due to varying state laws, limited legal precedent, and the fact that these rights are typically held by artists rather than labels. Some industry executives express concerns about consumer confusion, while other artists, such as Grimes and Holly Herndon, have embraced AI technology by training their own AI voice models. Meanwhile, companies like Uberduck, Supertone, Lingyin Engine, and Covers.ai are marketing models that replicate voices. Audius, a blockchain-based music platform, has taken a different approach by allowing artists to "opt-in" to include AI-generated works on their artist page, creating a separate tab for user-generated content. At the time of reporting, representatives from the involved parties had not provided comments on the matter.

Apple brings concert discovery features to Apple Music and Apple Maps. The Apple Music app will introduce a feature called Set Lists, allowing users to browse and listen to set lists from their favorite artists on tour. Apple Maps will incorporate a concert discovery feature with curated Guides highlighting music venues across 10 cities worldwide. Users will also be able to browse venues' upcoming shows through Shazam's concert discovery feature. The changes aim to enhance Apple's services and compete with rivals like Spotify, which has its own concert discovery functionality. Apple's new Guides are curated by Apple Music editors and will initially roll out in select cities, showcasing a range of music venues. The Set Lists feature will launch with artists such as Sam Smith, BLACKPINK, Kane Brown, and Ed Sheeran. While these additions are useful, Spotify still offers more personalized concert alerts and discovery tools for artists. The new Apple features are starting to roll out today but may take time to reach all users globally.
