Taylor Swift’s “The Eras Tour” Expected to Generate $4.6 Billion in Local Revenue. The tour is expected to generate a staggering $4.6 billion in consumer spending in the US alone. Research firm QuestionPro revealed that Swifties have been spending an average of $1,300 per person to attend the tour, which includes costs for tickets, travel accommodations, and clothing. The impact of the tour is evident in various cities, such as Chicago, where hotel occupancy rates reached a record-breaking 96.8% during Swift's performances. The tour has revitalized local economies, with Las Vegas experiencing a return to pre-pandemic tourism levels after Swift's concerts, and cities like Atlanta and Boston witnessing an increase in hotel bookings and tourism-related expenses. However, the high demand for tickets has resulted in some negative incidents, including violent harassment of fans by scalpers in Brazil. The tour will continue with upcoming shows in Pittsburgh, Minneapolis, and Cincinnati, followed by visits to several other North American cities before heading to Mexico and South America later in the year.
American Punk Rocker Jailed in Russia on Drug Trafficking Charges. Travis Michael Leake, a US citizen who lived in Moscow and played in punk bands, has been arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking. The Khamovniki District Court of Moscow has accused Leake of selling the drug mephedrone, which could result in a 20-year prison sentence if he is found guilty. Leake, a former US military paratrooper, had resided in Moscow for nearly ten years and was involved in various punk bands and music-related activities. He was also featured in an episode of Anthony Bourdain's Parts Unknown, where he criticized censorship in Russia. Leake denies the charges and expressed confusion about the accusations. The US State Department is aware of Leake's detention and is working to provide appropriate consular assistance. This incident follows the detention of other Americans in Russia, including WNBA star Brittney Griner and Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich.

The Beatles to release unreleased track completed with AI. Paul McCartney has announced that an unreleased Beatles track will be released this year, thanks to the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology. McCartney used AI to extract John Lennon's voice from an old demo and complete the untitled track. The demo was given to McCartney by Yoko Ono in 1994 and was recorded by Lennon on a piano in his New York apartment. The new version of the demo surfaced on a bootleg CD in 2009 without the background noise. With the help of AI techniques used in Peter Jackson's Get Back Beatles documentary series, McCartney was able to work on the unfinished song. The song, which was one of several on a cassette labeled "For Paul" made by Lennon before his death in 1980, will be released this year, although the official release date is yet to be announced.
Music Publishers Sue Twitter for $250 Million, Citing Copyright Infringement. After years of attempts to reach a licensing deal with Twitter, National Music Publishers' Association (NMPA) has filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against the social media company in federal court in Nashville. The NMPA accuses Twitter of failing to promptly remove or disable access to infringing material identified in copyright infringement notices. The lawsuit seeks damages of close to $250 million and includes a list of nearly 1,700 infringed works, including songs by artists like Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, and the Notorious B.I.G. Major music publishers such as Universal Music Publishing Group, Sony Music Publishing, and Warner Chappell are among the NMPA members involved in the suit. While other social media platforms have secured licensing agreements with rights holders, Twitter's negotiations stalled, leading to the lawsuit. The NMPA argues that Twitter's design as a multimedia platform relies on copyrighted audio and video recordings, contributing to its advertising business and revenue streams. The Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) provides guidelines for removing copyrighted content, but the NMPA claims that Twitter has either delayed or ignored requests for removal. Uh oh.

Biden announces Live Nation and Ticketmaster will allow consumers to see all fees up front. During a White House roundtable, President Joe Biden announced that Live Nation and Ticketmaster have committed to providing consumers with upfront, all-in pricing for concert tickets. This move aims to address the frustration caused by hidden fees that are often revealed late in the checkout process. Biden's announcement comes as the industry faces increased scrutiny over excessive ticketing fees, and it aligns with his efforts to combat hidden costs across various sectors of the economy. The president emphasized the importance of companies disclosing fees upfront to avoid surprises at the end of the transaction. The roundtable included representatives from companies already implementing all-in pricing or planning to offer this option in the near future. Live Nation, for example, pledged to list all prices upfront for tickets sold through Ticketmaster at over 200 venues, benefiting millions of customers. This commitment reflects Biden's focus on reducing costs for families and eliminating hidden fees.
