The U.S. Recorded Music Business Is Surging — Can It Return to Double-Digit Revenue Growth in 2023? The US recorded music business experienced significant growth in the first 20 weeks of 2023, with music consumption up 13.8% compared to the same period last year. Various factors contributed to this improvement, including the influence of Taylor Swift, Morgan Wallen, K-pop, vinyl sales, and stronger streaming numbers. Streaming accounted for 89.2% of total consumption, with on-demand streaming showing a growth rate of 14.7% through week 20. Album sales saw a turnaround, increasing by 10.2% to 39.3 million units, and physical albums, especially vinyl LPs, experienced substantial growth. The performance of both current and catalog music contributed to the gains, with catalog sales showing a 14.2% increase. The top artists of 2023 played a significant role in driving consumption, and if this momentum continues, it could lead to double-digit revenue growth for the industry.
