Spotify denies “30-second trick” can make artists rich. Spotify has refuted claims that users can exploit the platform's royalty system by repeatedly listening to their 30-second uploaded songs to earn monthly payments. JP Morgan finance analysts previously suggested that subscribers could make $1,200 a month by continuously playing their track 24/7. This tactic implied a manipulation of Spotify's royalty structure. However, Spotify CEO Daniel Ek clarified that this is not how their royalties work. While some songs have become shorter, Ek pointed out that most popular songs are still around 4 minutes. Concerns about fake streams and artificial streaming's impact on the music industry persist as Spotify operates with two tiers of royalties and pays artists monthly based on various factors, not solely per play or per stream.
