Spotify wants to clone podcasters' voices to translate them into other languages
The Verge is reporting that Spotify has introduced a groundbreaking voice translation feature for podcasts. The AI-powered tool allows podcasters to instantly translate their episodes into different languages using their own voice. Partnering with select podcasters, Spotify has already translated episodes into Spanish and French, with German episodes set to be released in the near future.
The technology behind this translation feature is OpenAI's voice transcription tool called Whisper. Whisper not only transcribes English speech but also translates various languages into English. However, Spotify's tool takes it a step further by not only providing speech-to-text translation but also reproducing the podcast in a synthesized version of the podcaster's own voice.
Spotify's Vice President of Personalization, Ziad Sultan, emphasized the authenticity that this technology brings to listeners worldwide, stating, "By matching the creator's own voice, Voice Translation gives listeners around the world the power to discover and be inspired by new podcasters in a more authentic way than ever before."
You can check out a few podcasts already translated here.
Spotify is currently testing its new translation technology it with a select group of podcasters. While the scope of its availability and timeline for expansion remains undisclosed, Spotify's foray into podcast translation has undoubtedly opened doors for a more inclusive and global podcasting community.
