Taylor Swift reveals backup plan for ‘Tortured Poets Department’ if she didn’t win a Grammy
Taylor Swift officially launched the second leg of her Eras Tour in Tokyo on February 7th, sharing insights about her upcoming album/era – The Tortured Poets Department.
The announcement of her 11th LP, which is due out on April 19th, came right after she secured the Best Pop Vocal Album award for ‘Midnights’ at the Grammys this past Sunday (February 4th). Swift revealed that she had a contingency plan in place just in case she didn't win any trophies. It was a plan she had shared with only a select few, including producer Jack Antonoff.
"Going to the Grammys, going in, I had this plan," she shared. "But I really hadn’t told very many other people. I thought, ‘OK, if I’m lucky enough to get up there and win one thing tonight, I’m just gonna do it. I’m just gonna announce my new album.’”
Swift expressed her gratitude for winning a Grammy and being able to share the news on stage, avoiding the need to execute her backup plan in Tokyo stating, “And luckily enough, that ended up happening. My backup plan was I was going to do it tonight in Tokyo. But thanks to you and your support, I was lucky enough to win a Grammy and tell you about it on stage at the Grammys. And now we can talk about it afterward, we can do like a debrief tonight.”
She then proceeded to discuss her upcoming album, ‘Tortured Poets Department’, revealing that she started working on it immediately after completing ‘Midnights’, a process spanning approximately two years.
“I’ve been working on it for about two years,” she mentioned. “I kept working on it throughout the U.S. tour, and when it was perfect, in my opinion — when it was good enough for you — I finished it. I am so, so excited that soon you’ll get to hear it, soon we’ll get to experience that together.”
Following the Grammy announcement, Swift promptly shared the album artwork and later unveiled the track list, featuring 17 songs, including collaborations with Post Malone and Florence + the Machine.
