The E-Girl Review: rumors about 5SOS's label, a mxmtoon collaboration moment, and more
We're taking a look at the top moments from this past week that are infused with alternative energy, but still, hold up the fun of living in the limelight of mainstream pop! This collection of the top stories and moments is packed full of interesting collabs, industry trends, and artists to keep your eyes on. Rebecca Black revives viral sensation "Friday", but with an emo remix twist While most of us may try to block out 2011 and the strange aurora and energy that comes with it, you may still recall Rebecca Black's "Friday" music video, which quickly became a viral meme. The song was played on repeat out of every tween's iPod Touch for what felt like hours on end. To celebrate its 10 year anniversary, Black has released a remixed version of the track, this time with a variety of artists featured. In fact, emo legends 3OH!3 collaborated with her on this one, giving it that edgy feel. That's right... "DONTTRUSTME" icons and teeny-bopper Internet sensation have joined forces to give us something that feels new but is also deeply nostalgic. Particularly, this song extends the hyper-pop trope that 2011 is often mockingly associated with, but has recently become popularized by artists such as 100 gecs thanks to TikTok.
5 Seconds of Summer rumored to have left Interscope Records Fans are speculating that the Australian pop-rock band 5 Seconds of Summer (5SOS) may have parted ways with their label Interscope Records. As of Tuesday, fans began to notice the band was removed from Interscope's artist roster page online. The change seems to have taken effect on the UK site as well. It has also been noticed that Interscope and the band have stopped following each other on social media. No official statement has been released nor has there been any indication of a new label that the band may have moved to. The management company, Modest! Management, appears to have remained the same.
Ricky Montgomery and mxmtoon join forces on a version of "Line Without a Hook" After the song became a viral trend and sensation on TikTok, Ricky Montgomery has now revisited the song "Line Without a Hook". This time he has joined forces with mxmtoon! Interestingly, "Line Without a Hook" was originally released in 2016, but thanks to the forces of the Internet, Ricky has been able to recreate it in a beautiful and even more elevated way. Mxmtoon is no stranger to the viral power of TikTok, either, with her song "prom dress" has become a trend multiple times, most notably in 2020 upon the cancellation of many high school seniors' prom. Both artists are noteworthy for their clean, clear-cut voices and strong vocals. Their lyrics and songs feature torments of love and anxiety. In this combination track, their strengths mesh well to reveal a partnership that seems to be just so commonsense.
Maggie Lindemann covers "I Wouldn't Mind" by He Is We Artist-on-the-rise Maggie Lindemann has graced the planet with her beautiful rendition of the 2017 track "I Wouldn't Mind". This indie-infused song is already so pure and peaceful, yet full of emotion and complexity that it seems almost possible for it to get better. However, Maggie's full, well-rounded breath and expression of the emotion and complex themes behind the track, breathes a new life into the song. Lindeman, who is only 22, is most well known for her single "Pretty Girl" which climbed international charts. She's known for her cross between the sweet, pop star and her alternative singer-songwriter energy.
We're loving the recent interesting collaborations and can't wait to see what this may mean for (dare we say this word) tours and concerts post-pandemic. What artists are you keeping your eyes on this week?
